Avoiding saturated fats and increasing intake of omega-3 fatty acids benefits neurological function. In summary, following the Mediterranean diet saves memory.

This is according to a study published in Neurology, the journal of the American Association of Neurologists. Researchers followed 17,478 Americans over 64 for four years to test their adherence to the Mediterranean diet and its effects on memory and cognitive performance.

The data collected show healthy people who follow the Mediterranean diet more closely have a 19% lower risk of developing neurological diseases than others. A benefit associated directly with the dietary style, based on the consumption of omega-3-containing food and very low in saturated fat, meat and dairy products.
