World Food Day, October 16, 2016. The annual FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations) meeting is being held this year under the theme “The climate is changing. Food and agriculture too.”
The World Day aims to revive discussion on measures to mitigate the impact of climate change on food security-understood as access to food for all. In fact, rising temperatures and climate disasters affect the poorest populations the most, exacerbating their hardships.
In view of the ever-increasing global population-estimated at 9.6 billion individuals in 2050-the FAO reiterates the urgency of veering on the path of sustainability of basic food production-agricultural resources, livestock and fisheries-and consumption, reducing waste along the entire supply chain, right into the home.
World Food Day commemorates the establishment of FAO on Oct. 16, 1945, in Canada for the purpose of ridding humanity of hunger and malnutrition.
