Bofrost, Italy’s leading home frozen food retailer, is investing in sustainability on both industrial and supply chain fronts. It halves energy consumption and cuts harmful emissions, thanks to an innovative refrigeration system. And it introduces to the catalog a wide basket of organic foods, the only ones that really can best safeguard the environment and health.

Bofrost, off to organic frozen foods.

Bofrost’s selection of organic foods includes 33 products. This includes natural vegetables, minestrone, vegan ready meals, side dishes, pizzas, snacks, main courses, meat and fish dishes, fruits, desserts, and ice cream. (1)

Sustainability and innovation particularly distinguish Happy Pappe weaning foods, the first line of organic and frozen baby food products in Italy.

All of Bofrost Italy’s organic frozen foods are also packaged in environmentally sustainable packaging. A forward-looking choice, already adopted by Almaverde Bio for its frozen vegetables wrapped in compostable materials, which can therefore be delivered along with the organic fraction.

Solar power and state-of-the-art cold storage

The renovation of Bofrost Italia’s headquarters in San Vito al Tagliamento (Pordenone) – 15,000 square meters of offices, warehouses and cold storage – is also marked by all-round sustainability. A transcritical CO2 refrigeration system was installed to replace the old ozone-damaging HFC (hydrofluorocarbon) fluid refrigeration system. With the dual function of feeding the cold rooms where frozen foods are stored (at -23°C) and providing air conditioning to the offices.

The CO2 plant-a natural, non-toxic, non-flammable, ozone-depleting gas-half the consumption associated with storing 7 thousand tons of frozen food. And power is now provided by solar panels installed on the roof. A renewable source of energy that is also stored, to meet nighttime needs. Hot water is in turn used in processes.

The project received the‘Best in Europe in sector/Industry’ award. At ATMOsphere Europe 2019, an international event dedicated to industrial refrigeration. And it is part of the energy overhaul path that also involves the Veneto-based company’s 50 or so Italian branches, which are subject to installation of photovoltaic systems.
