Il cibo \u00e8 il materiale pi\u00f9 comunemente sprecato negli Stati Uniti, in quanto esprime rispettivamente il 24% e il 22% dei rifiuti solidi urbani (municipal solid waste, MSW) smaltiti in discarica e bruciati.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Food Loss and Waste<\/strong> (FLW) &#8211; vale a dire, le perdite di cibo nelle fasi produttiva e logistica e gli sprechi alimentari nella distribuzione, vendita e consumo (2) &#8211; coinvolgono un&#8217;ampia platea di stakeholders, dalle aziende agricole alle imprese alimentari, le famiglie e i gestori dei rifiuti. Oltre alla pubblica amministrazione, che nel 2015 ha assunto l\u2019impegno di dimezzare FLW entro il 2030, in linea con il Sustainable Development Target 12.3 in Agenda ONU 2030. (3)<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_Metodi_di_analisi\"><\/span>2) Metodi di analisi<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Il rapporto EPA<\/strong> utilizza <em>Life Cycle Assessment(LCA) <\/em>e<em> Circularity Assessment<\/em> per valutare gli impatti ambientali e il contributo verso l\u2019economia circolare di undici strategie per la prevenzione di FLW e la gestione dei \u2018sidestream materials\u2019, dalle donazioni alimentari e l\u2019upcycling (4) fino al riciclo, la valorizzazione energetica e infine lo smaltimento.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Una revisione<\/strong> di circa 250 analisi del ciclo di vita dei prodotti ha consentito di determinare gli impatti ambientali, nonch\u00e9 di eseguire una valutazione qualitativa del contributo di ciascun percorso a un\u2019economia circolare. A tale scopo, i ricercatori di EPA hanno utilizzato gli strumenti e i dati di cui a seguire:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Landfill Gas Emissions Model (LandGEM). Un modello di stima dei tassi di emissione dei gas (metano, anidride carbonica, composti organici non metanici e singoli inquinanti atmosferici, gas totali) prodotti dalle discariche di rifiuti solidi urbani;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Waste Reduction Model (WARM) fornisce stime delle emissioni di gas serra totali del ciclo di vita dei prodotti, legati alle diverse pratiche di gestione dei rifiuti, compreso lo smaltimento in discarica;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Inventory of U.S. Greenhouse Gas (GHG) degli Stati Uniti registra le emissioni e gli assorbimenti di gas serra attribuiti ogni anno a ciascuna fonte e settore economico, dal 1990 a oggi;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Landfill and Landfill Gas Energy Database (LMOP Database) raccoglie i dati chiave per le discariche di rifiuti solidi urbani negli Stati Uniti, comprese le informazioni sui progetti energetici dei gas di discarica.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_Wasted_Food_Scale\"><\/span>3) Wasted Food Scale<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Wasted Food Scale<\/strong> (in copertina) \u00e8 la nuova gerarchia degli undici possibili percorsi (o destini) di FLW &#8211; dal pi\u00f9 virtuoso al meno vantaggioso dal punto di vista ambientale &#8211; elaborata da EPA in sostituzione della precedente Food Recovery Hierarchy, che l&#8217;agenzia aveva messo a punto negli anni &#8217;90 del secolo scorso. La nuova gerarchia riflette le \u2018best practices\u2019 nonch\u00e9 i progressi scientifici e tecnologici sviluppati negli ultimi decenni per ridurre \u2018food loss\u2019, \u2018food waste\u2019 e i loro impatti negativi sull\u2019ambiente.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Alcuni percorsi<\/strong> (i.e. donate, upcycle) sono collocati su uno stesso livello, in quanto EPA considera l\u2019equivalenza delle loro prestazioni ambientali. La gerarchia cos\u00ec aggiornata sottolinea il valore della prevenzione e l\u2019esigenza di sottrarre i rifiuti alimentari dai percorsi di smaltimento in discarica. Il rapporto \u2018<em>Quantifying Methane Emissions from Landfilled Food Waste<\/em>\u2019 a sua volta mostra le emissioni di CH4 prodotte dai rifiuti alimentari in decomposizione nelle discariche di rifiuti solidi urbani, in USA, dal 1990 al 2020 (5,6).<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4_%E2%80%98From_Field_to_Bin_conclusioni\"><\/span>4) \u2018From Field to Bin\u2019, conclusioni<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Le conclusioni<\/strong> del rapporto EPA &#8211; in linea con la letteratura scientifica e i dati finora raccolti nel progetto di ricerca Wasteless, in Horizon Europe, a cui partecipa la nostra squadra di Wiise (2,7) &#8211; rivelano quanto segue:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; la sovrapproduzione alimentare \u00e8 il primo e pi\u00f9 grave problema da affrontare. (8) Anche con apposite misure regolatorie e\/o fiscali, aggiunge chi scrive, ovvero tramite imposizione di apposita rendicontazione in ambito ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance);<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; donazioni alimentari e upcycling, a seguire, sono i percorsi pi\u00f9 virtuosi (4,9,10). Sebbene i loro benefici non siano paragonabili rispetto agli impatti ambientali della produzione;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; il riciclo di FLW in ammendanti del suolo offre l\u2019opportunit\u00e0 di migliorare sul lungo termine la salute dei suoli e di contribuire al rinnovo gli ecosistemi, grazie al recupero e la restituzione al suolo di azoto e carbonio;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; lo smaltimento di FLW in discarica e impianti di trattamento delle acque reflue ha un impatto significativo sulle emissioni di metano.<\/p>\n<p>#<a href=\"https:\/\/wastelesseu.com\/\">Wasteless<\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Dario Dongo e Gabriele Sapienza<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Note\"><\/span>Note<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>(1) Part 2 &#8211; From Field to Bin: The Environmental Impacts of US Food Waste Pathways.
