Between policy and corporate responsibility, the challenge of obesity and diabetes

At the last plenary session of the ‘European Platform for Action on Diet, Physical Activity and Health’, in Brussels on April 6 and 7, 2016, debated a number of key players-including representatives from WHO (World Health Organization) and JRC (Joint Research Center)-variously involved in European policies to combat the epidemic of obesity and diabetes that is affecting the population.

The meeting confirmed that the initiatives being promoted are still insufficient to counter current trends in food, as several organizations pointed out (see the speech by Beuc, representing consumers).

Although the worsening health and well-being conditions of the population (particularly young people) are a cause for concern-not least because of the risk of escalating health care costs-the actions in the field are weak, and there is no shortage of missed opportunities.

On the meeting of the European Platform for Action on Diet, Physical Activity and Health, Dario Dongo offers a summary of the arguments that emerged and additional insights.
