Companies alongside workers in agriculture

Agriculture is the second largest employment sector in the world and employs more than one billion people. Yet, still for too many, that in agriculture is an at-risk job where basic rights are not respected.

Child labor is widespread in the Global South, which in some cases results in children being unable to access primary education. For agribusiness companies with business relationships around the world, it is important to take steps to protect the rights of workers throughout the production chain, with best practices to be shared with suppliers.

Key elements are: the promotion of health and safety in the workplace; a decent minimum wage; and respect for the right to demand better working conditions and to obtain protection in case of disputes. Investing in workers’ rights-as also highlighted in Oxfam’s Better Jobs, Better Supply Chains report-allows companies to intercept the expectations of customers, consumers and investors, and because of the positive impact on reputation.
