The presence of the Glycemic Index on food labels can help in the fight against diabetes and obesity. This was affirmed by nutrition experts who gathered at an international summit in Stresa in early June 2013.
The glycemic index is essential to distinguish the quality of carbohydrates from nutritional and dietary points of view.
Researchers and clinicians from 10 countries and 3 continents confirm the scientific validity of the evidence showing correlation between low-glycemic index diets and reduced risk of diabetes 2 and coronary heart disease, as well as glycemic control in diabetics and aid in weight maintenance in the population.
In the consensus document, scientists recommend that the Glycemic Index be included in both national dietary guidelines and nutrition tables on labels.
Therefore, the European legislator should update the exhaustive list of nutrition claims allowed in the EU (EC Reg. 1924/06, Annex).
