The 2020 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to the World Food Program (WFP). The UN agency is on the front lines against hunger and insecurity of supply(food security).

World Food Programme, the reasons for the award

‘The WFP has been awarded the 2020 Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts in combating hunger, for his contribution in improving conditions for peace in conflict-affected areas, and for his action in leading efforts to prevent the use of hunger as a weapon of war and conflict,” is the Norwegian Nobel Committee’s justification.

The World Food Program was founded in 1961. ‘With 86.7 million people assisted in some 83 countries each year, the World Food Programme (Wfp), headquartered in Rome, is the leading humanitarian organization and UN agency committed to saving and changing lives by providing food assistance in emergencies and working with communities to improve their nutrition and build their resilience‘.

War and hunger

War and hunger is the leitmotif that animates much of the World Food Programme‘s international aid missions. Children-as UNICEF also reminds us in its Report for Humanitarian Action 2020-are the first victims of conflict. And the latest report, presented on 17.7.20 by WFP together with theFood and Agriculture Organization (FAO), signals the topicality of the acute food crisis emergency in at least 27 countries.

The UN agency is funded only by governments and citizens. It works around the world, providing people in distress with both direct food aid and food procurement tools(vouchers, for example). Among the various forms of help each person can provide is the #ShareTheMeal app. One click on your smartphone is all it takes to donate 70 cents and feed a child for an entire day.
