Probiotics could result in effects on body weight. The hypothesis emerges from a meta-analysis published in
Microb Pathog
, which evaluated the role of certain lactobacilli.
The researchers reviewed the outcome of 82 animal, human and in vitro studies. It was found that some lactobacillus species (L. acidophilus, L. fermentum, L. ingluviei) promote weight gain, others (L. plantarum, L. gasseri) are associated with weight loss.
Since 2006, probiotics have been added to the feed of farm animals in the EU to replace antibiotics, the administration of which to prevent disease and promote weight gain is prohibited. As a result, these microorganisms have been shown to be effective in reducing digestive disorders and weight gain.
More uncertain is the effect of probiotics in treating obesity in humans. A field of research that raises many hopes.
