The University of Camerino (Unicam) has launched Canapa Revolution, a project to extract and purify CBD from industrial hemp waste and create valuable by-products.

Hemp Revolution, valuable raw materials

The business idea of Hemp Revolution is to use industrial hemp as a multifunctional product and an emblem of thecircular economy. Capable of providing raw materials for food, nutraceutical and pharmaceutical applications, as well as inputs for agriculture and animal husbandry, green building, textiles d bioplastics.

Hemp is after all an extraordinary resource. This resilient plant, which grows without the need for agrotoxics, is as outstanding in CO2 sequestration as it is in soil purification. Its inflorescences contain active ingredients of interest in medicine and herbal medicine. And the seeds, as such or pressed into oil, protein, Omega 3, fiber and micronutrients worthy of the title of
superfood
.

Increased profitability

Hemp Revolution
, the project presented in Rimini on 6.5.22 at Macfrut 2022, aims to extract and purify cannabidiol (CBD) from industrial hemp to improve the profitability of the crop.

Theproject aims to isolate cbd in its pure, crystalline form from inflorescence and waste materials of industrial hemp provided by a partner company.

During the first year of research, we fine-tuned, thanks to the machinery acquired through the PSR project, the various steps that led us to obtain a fair amount of purified cbd‘, explains Riccardo Petrelli, scientific leader of the project coordinated together with Prof. Filippo Maggi in the University of Camerino, School of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Health Products.
